Use a pencil, paper, and cup. Look for two minutes: compare rim width, handle opening, and contact with the table. Draw lightly for five minutes; add one shadow.
Contour: Draw a shoe for five minutes without shading. Follow the outside edge, then add just three interior lines that explain its form.
2.
Negative space: Place two utensils together. Draw the gap between them first, then the utensils around it. Compare the gap with the real arrangement before correcting the drawing.
3.
Tone: Fold a piece of paper and light it from one side. Draw three shapes for light, midtone, and shadow. Keep the lightest area as bare paper.
Repeat the cup study on a fresh page. Put both drawings side by side. Compare rim width, handle opening, contact with the table, and shadow shape. Choose one relationship to practise tomorrow. Keep both drawings; the goal is a more deliberate observation, not a perfect picture.
