These are simplified snapshots, not photographs. Solid particles vibrate; liquid and gas particles move. Do not infer that dots on a still page are motionless.

In a solid, particles stay near fixed positions and vibrate. In a liquid, particles remain close but can move past one another. In a gas, particles are widely separated and move freely between collisions. Heating transfers energy; particles do not swell into larger particles. During melting, the arrangement changes. The substance remains water when ice melts; this is a physical change.
