Speed Drill: Order of Operations (PEMDAS)

Mastering math fundamentals is about repetition until the rules become second nature. Today’s drill focuses on the Order of Operations.

The Teacher's Rule: "Left to Right" #

The biggest mistake students make is thinking Multiplication always comes before Division. In reality, they are a team. You must solve them in the order they appear from left to right. The same applies to Addition and Subtraction.

The Checklist:

  • 1.
    Parentheses
  • 2.
    Exponents
  • 3.
MD (Multiplication & Division, left to right)
  • 4.
AS (Addition & Subtraction, left to right)

  • Worked Example #

    Evaluate:12÷3×2+(85)12 \div 3 \times 2 + (8 - 5)

  • 1.
    Parentheses first:(85)=3(8 - 5) = 3. Expression is now: 12÷3×2+312 \div 3 \times 2 + 3
  • 2.
    Left to Right (MD):12÷3=412 \div 3 = 4. Expression is now: 4×2+34 \times 2 + 3
  • 3.
    Left to Right (MD):4×2=84 \times 2 = 8. Expression is now: 8+38 + 3
  • 4.
    Final Addition:8+3=118 + 3 = 11

  • Daily Speed Drill #

Set your timer. The goal is 100% accuracy within 2 minutes. If you miss one, analyze the 'Left-to-Right' rule again.
